For years, I was defined by my career. I measured my worth by how much I could accomplish, how productive I could be, and how far up the ladder I could climb. I was obsessed with productivity, always chasing the next milestone, thinking that was the only way to be successful. But looking back, I realise I had become disconnected from the things that truly mattered. I lost sight of who I was at my core, beyond the titles and accomplishments. My journey wasn’t just about climbing higher—it was about learning to pause, breathe, and rediscover myself.

The turning point for me came unexpectedly, through a health issue that forced me to slow down. It was as if the universe knew I needed a wake-up call. At first, I resisted—who was I without my busy schedule, my endless to-do lists? But slowly, as I was forced to take time for myself, I began to reflect on the life I had been living. It was a heart attack that brought me down, painful as it was, it became the catalyst for my transformation. I was so blessed to recover and be alive! It pushed me to reconsider my priorities and question what I had been chasing all those years.

I realised that the high-stress, high-reward lifestyle I had once glorified was no longer serving me. I had bought into the traditional notion of success—where career accomplishments were everything, and the rest was a luxury. But as I faced my own vulnerability, and yes it was more than an eye opener. I saw how fragile life could be, how fleeting those external rewards really were. What was the point of all the hustle if I was sacrificing my well-being and my happiness along the way? I began to understand that there was a different way to live—a more balanced, peaceful, and joyful way.

My heart attack didn’t just make me slow down physically; it made me slow down mentally and emotionally too. I had time to reflect on my values, and what emerged was a clear understanding of what truly mattered to me: joy, simplicity, connection. I started redefining my life around these values, letting go of the pressure to be constantly “on” and giving myself permission to just be. It was a radical shift and I’m still processing it now, years later but it felt liberating. I began to see that life could be rich and fulfilling, not by doing more, but by being more present in the simple, beautiful moments.

This transformation also involved a deep process of self-discovery. I had been so consumed by my career roles and expectations from everybody around me that I had lost touch with my true self. I had defined myself by what I did, not who I was. Rediscovering the core of who I am—my passions, my desires, my joy—became the most important part of my journey. It wasn’t easy, and it required a lot of re-adjustment, but it was worth it. I found that when I reconnected with my authentic self, everything in my life started to align in a way that felt more natural and fulfilling.

I also began to push back against the external pressures that had shaped so much of my previous mindset. Society tells us that success looks a certain way—busy, exhausted, and constantly striving for more. We all heard about it and we are well aware of it. But I’m here to tell you that there’s another way. You don’t have to prove your worth through constant achievement. You don’t need external validation to live a meaningful life. True fulfilment comes from within, from living in alignment with your values and finding joy in the everyday moments that make life worth living.

Now, I embrace a life that prioritises rest, joy, and simplicity. It doesn’t mean I’ve given up on ambition or passion; it means I’ve redefined success on my own terms. My journey of personal transformation and self-discovery has shown me that life is not just about what we achieve, but how we feel, how we live, and how much we truly connect with ourselves and others. As I reflect on the approaching reality of retirement, I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and concern. The dream of enjoying my retirement comfortably has lingered and worried me in the back of my mind, but I've realised it's time to face it head-on.
